The plants were all carelessly wrapped in one sheet of dry newspaper. There were no dried water stains on any of the paper sheets (believe me, I checked carefully.) So, I didn't have to be Sherlock Holmes to put together that the plants were BONE DRY when they were packed in South Carolina the week before.
Nobody even bothered to drop that into a grocery store plastic bag, just so the plants wouldn't lose more moisture during the trip to Oregon.
The plants looked dreadful. One in particular (the Primal Scream) actually looked dead.
They were bone dry, as I said, without so much as a handful of damp peat moss in with them. The tops were yellow and horrible. I soaked the miserable things in Miracle-Gro water for five days before potting them up. I will be very surprised if they do anything but die.
I have ordered hundreds, maybe thousands of plants, over the last 38 years and I have rarely received such a thoughtlessly packed, poor quality order.
Last year, I ordered from Oaks Daylilies and I will stick with them. They cost half what Roycroft's does and they were wonderful specimens that arrived properly packed. Even the three, much less expensive Primal Scream daylily starts I ordered from Proven Winners a month ago looked marvelous compared to the over-priced refuse that I received from Roycroft Daylily Nursery.
I paid through the nose and got treated like rubbish for my trouble.

What can I say? Live and learn. I was very distressed after receiving my first order from Roycroft. I have not lost one; they all look great and are growing nicely.
One of the daylilies sent to me just bloomed today and the whole family is stunned. It is the nicest daylily I have ever seen.
It is Forsyth's Golden Eagle. The bloom is 7 inches across (it's a "baby" plant, right?) and is the cheeriest color.
I can't wait to see what the others do.
I'll tell you, Mr. Roycroft has made a permanent fan and customer out of me. I am placing another order right now.
I don't know the Roycrofts and have received no consideration from anyone. These opinions are my own feelings and experiences. |

Awesome customer service, gorgeous cultivars, and great sale. I'm having a new vole problem but had purchased these to donate for a memorial bed. I'm going out of town and this order's ship date was moved up for me which was very kind and helpful. I love that bonus plants were included, which I think are mismarked as I can't find reference to them, but no complaints here. I'm sure they will be a gorgeous surprise. There were 3 that I kept to see if I can try my hand at hybridizing, and I am hoping the pesky voles don't get to the roots. I just may have to get a cat.
