The company has done okay, but I haven't wanted to keep ordering from them. After gardening for about 2 years, looking back on what grew and what didn't I'd say I've had a neutral experience. They have certainly worked with me to do refunds and replacements where I had kept track well enough to submit requests. Live plants were delivered in good packaging and are mostly surviving if not thriving. But when I look up the things that stand out healthy and happy in my garden, they are all from other mail-order companies. This could absolutely be a coincidence, and I don't have any complaints with their customer service, but it's just not been worth the money in my garden.

This company used to be better...I just received an order for four plants - one is going to come "LATER" according to the packing slip. The ones that did come were moist, but not well-packed, and some of the dirt was all over the inside of the box. Two of the plants seem ok, but one seems slightly dried out and droopy - like it was already that way when it was packaged for delivery. I'm waiting to see what they say about the rest of my order....

This year was the second year that I have purchased from Bluestone Perennials. The first year I purchased 14 different varieties of plants and the second year I purchased 8 more varieties. This year I was able to shop more at local nurseries which is why I purchased less. I have also purchased spring bulbs from Bluestone. I will admit that when the plants arrived the first year I was a little disappointed and concerned about the size of the plants. However they started to grow by leaps and bounds the second that I planted them. I also did not expect that they would flower so profusely in their first year. I am very happy to report that all 14 varieties came back this year even though we had more snow than in previous years (Zone 6b). All of them have grown significantly in size in their second year and look very happy. The packaging last year was slightly better than this year. There was no spillage last year but this year the box was kind of beat up with soil all over the place. There was one plant this year that I was disappointed with but when I contacted them via email I received a response and refund in about seven days. I find this to be very reasonable considering that they are so busy this year. Some of the new varieties that I purchased this year are already flowering and appear to be just as happy as those that I purchased last year. I have no doubt that they will return next year. As far as spring flowers go, the bulbs that I purchased were healthy, large and all bloomed beautifully this spring (daffodils, hyacinths, chionodoxa, scilla). They were also all true to color which was not true of bulbs that I purchased from two other companies. They have a good selection of bulbs including some unique varieties that were new to me. I like that I can easily search for deer resistant bulbs as deer are a huge problem in my area. I have already started planning my fall bulb order with them this year. Overall I would highly recommend purchasing plants from Bluestone Perennials. If I lived closer I would definitely visit their nursery outlet.

I planted my bulbs in the Fall in large tubs with Moisture Mix potting soil. They were covered over the winter with some shade cloth to keep away squirrels and raccoons. A few tulips showed some puny growth, but went no further. I did not get one single bloom or healthy plant from my 60.00 order. I dug up some bulbs most were missing entirely a couple of slimy rotted ones were all that was left. I sent this information to their customer service twice with no reply.

This is the most unethical company on the internet. Although they scammed me for only $69.76, I am determined to exhaust all of my options to expose their fraudulent practices. They truly insult customer’s intelligence with their false advertisements. What you see on their site is not what they will send you. On April 19th, I went to their site and order 2 Lupine Woodfield Hybrids and Lupine Mini Gallery™ Red. It shows the picture of the plants and colorful flowers. At the end of the order, I never receive the status of my order. I then sent them two emails which they never replied to. On April 29th, I received a generic email that shipping time is “The Week Of May 3rd, 2021”. Please keep in mind that this company is in Ohio, and I live in Georgia. On May 11th, I received tiny dead plants, no flowers as shown on their site, the soil was parched ( they were not in a soil pot), and most of the plants had gray dead-looking stems. With the two attempts to reach them before, I feel they are aware of their fraudulent practice, so not answering calls or emails. While the review link on their site is loaded with fake positive reviews, other external sites say otherwise. There are countless decent businesses available to the consumer. When it comes to Bluestone Perennials, buyer beware!

I have ordered from Bluestone many times. Last time I did wait longer than normal for my items to arrive, but I’m aware that it’s a USPS issue and not a Bluestone caused issue. I highly recommend them for one of a kind and hard to find plants. I’ve had really good success with my plants and would absolutely order from them again.

Below is the email I sent to Bluestone Perrenials. No response from the company Hello, I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with an order I received last fall. The order number is 742666. As you can see from the previous email last fall, one of the allium bulbs was completely rotten. The other four bulbs were moldy and shriveled, but not rotted through. You refunded a whopping 1.19 for the one completely rotten bulb. Now that it is spring, one of the four remaining bulbs has come up and it looks like it has a flower bud. It remains to be seen if it will indeed open because the tulip bulbs I bought at the same time did not all open. I will discuss the tulips in a minute. The other three allium bulbs came up, but they are thin strips of foliage (like when a tulip gets old and no longer flowers) and they are not forming flower buds, nor do they look like they could. The picture below shows the one allium with a bud at the bottom of the frame. The other ones are just straps of foliage as I described (unable to attach picture in this review) I ordered Beautiful Blends Tulip Twilight Sparkle, which was supposed to be six dark purple tulips and six pink tulips. What I got was 8 pink tulips, 4 dark purple tulips--one of which never opened--and one scraggly white tulip that was not even supposed to be there. (unable to attach picture in this review) One of the dark purple tulips never opened. See picture below (unable to attach picture in this review) It is too soon to know the fate of the other items I ordered, but the yarrow looks scrawny and there are no signs of the cimicifuga. I hope that you will make an effort to restore my faith in your company by refunding the amount of my entire order.

My plants were not packed well at all. The plants were not secured and most of the dirt was in the box. Lots of broken stems and leaves. Plants were extremely root-bound and at least one had mildew on the leaves, with the others very wilted. I was very disappointed as Bluestone has such a great variety of plants. Used to order every year in the past but hadn't in recent years and decided to give them another chance. I contacted customer service and received no answer, (and they may have been very busy) however when I posted a negative review on TrustPilot, I was contacted and received the refund I requested. Bring back the old Bluestone! I don't like the plantable pots and they do not seem to work well.

I have brand new landscape and have had the experience of buying many plants both in nurseries and online over the past year. For online shopping, there are have been a few standouts in quality of plants shipped. Bluestone is one of the best ones so far. I was searching for Amsonia hubrichtii. I ordered 3 from Bluestone and 2 from another online vendor. While Bluestone charged $16.5 per plant versus the $11.50 from the other vendor, the plant I received from Bluestone was far in away superior. Truly it was 3x larger and since planted just a few weeks ago, it's already doubled in size. The other vendors plant is doing fine, but it doesn't seem likely it will catch up this season. I also have to say I very much like the coir fiber 'pots'. I cringe when I think of all the black plastic pots I have building up. I always appreciate the vendors who are trying to find ways to reduce their use.

Posted on January 17, 2012, updated April 22, 2021 I haven't dealt with Bluestone in a number of years....I do remember getting some nice grasses in small pots that all lived and 8-10 years later, are still flourishing! My main reason for writing concerns the number of complaints aired here recently about Bluestone's prices. I decided to spend a couple of hours on the website to really examine the prices and compare Bluestone's offerings to other well known perennial/shrub nurseries. What I found is that while Bluestone's prices cannot be considered "cheap", their prices for single plants are pretty much in line with most other comparable nurseries, $6.95-$10.95 for perennials and $8.95- $13.95 for most shrubs. I think this suggests a new buying strategy: instead of getting the old 3 packs, all you would really need is one big plant to fill the same amount of space. I understand that some people like to watch things grow, but you would get a flowering sized plant much faster with the larger pots, so not everything is negative about the price increases. My only cavil is that the size of the SHIPPED plants are not indicated for the shrubs. (although Bluestone does list the size of a mature plant). For example, if I ordered a Daphne, would I get a plant 2 inches high or 12 inches? Some nurseries, such as Siskiyou, actually list the size of the shipped shrubs and conifers, and I find this enormously helpful. As far as where to go if you have truly "had it" with Bluestone, I would suggest Santa Rosa Gardens. They have competitively priced plants and are a pleasure to work with.
On April 22nd, 2021, dave12122 added the following: I just received a recent order from Bluestone, my first in a number of years Only one plant was under consideration, Helianthemum "Wisley Primrose". I am surprised about the number of comments mentioning "tiny plants". My specimens were HUGE with flower buds, and practically burst out of the container. They were a bit stretched toward the top of the box, but that is typical for plants placed in a dark container for 3-4 days and once they are planted in a sunny location, will soon recover. The shipping was extremely fast and Bluestone was faithful to the original ship date. Their prices have crept up somewhat but are still competitive given the large size of perennials offered. Considering the many varieties Bluestone lists that no one else does. their on line catalog is worth serious study. A fantastic experience!! Order with confidence!! A++

My plants arrived on time and in excellent condition. Love the use of plantable pots instead of plastic. My only complaint is the plant tags all came loose during shipping. Fortunately everything I ordered was quite different and easy to sort out, but I could see this causing problems for others.

I’ve been purchasing plants from Bluestone for almost 20 years. I don’t know what’s recently happened to their customer service. It’s not there at all. I placed an online order April 2, 2021. Paid by PalPal. Spent over $100. I never received a confirmation. I called them last week and was told they would reissue the confirmation thru the computer system to my email. I was told the shipment was scheduled to ship the week of April 12. I never did receive the confirmation. I called again today, spoke to Kelly at 10 AM. She saw my order in her computer, she said. Then her computer froze. She could not help me. She asked for my telephone number. Said she would call me back. I never got a call back and it’s now after 5 PM EST. Bluestone has my $113 but they do not have my respect at this point. I hope to get my plants shortly. Very frustrating.

Posted on April 6, 2021, updated April 6, 2021 Posted on June 19, 2020, updated April 6, 2021 Posted on June 9, 2020, updated June 19, 2020 I am beyond frustrated with trying to get a response in regard to a plant that was missing from my order, and am thisclose to filing a chargeback request with my credit card company. Cliff's Notes version: On 4/24/20 I placed an online order with Bluestone for 14 plants, one of which was Amsonia 'Storm Cloud' for $16.95. When the order arrived on 5/16/20, the Amsonia was not included. All the other plants were there. There was nothing in the box to indicate why there was a plant missing. A photo was taken of the plants that had been in the box. I emailed Bluestone (with the photo) on 5/18/20 to advise them that they had not sent one of the plants, and asked them what was going on. Was it being sent separately? (doubtful!) Was it not available? If so, I should be issued a refund (but had not been.) I waited 10 days for them to respond. Nothing. On 5/28/20 I phoned them during what their voicemail message said was their current "telephone business hours" of 1-4 pm Eastern time. After the recorded message, my call was automatically transferred to what another recorded message said was the "catalog desk." There is no way to access any other part of their phone tree, so I left a message there and reiterated that I had emailed them 10 days ago about this but had got no response. I received no phone call back, so on 5/30/20 I sent yet another email, with the same information and photo as the first, and reminding them that I had also left a phone message. No response. On 6/5/20 I called Bluestone AGAIN, during their supposed phone hours, and was only able to leave another message at their "catalog desk." This time I said that if I didn't hear from them in 3 days, I would file a dispute with my credit card for the cost of the merchandise (and sales tax) that was paid for but not received. However, I have decided to first post this review, mainly to let people know that it seems to be impossible to get a response from Bluestone if there is a problem with an order, but also as a last ditch effort to get SOME kind of a response. If this doesn't work, I will go ahead and file a credit card dispute. I realize that this is a very challenging time for everybody, but 3 weeks with no reponse whatsoever to a report of a plant entirely missing from a paid order is beyond frustrating. What does it take to at least get an acknowledgment of a customer communucation to them??
On June 19th, 2020, proserpine changed the rating from negative to positive and added the following: After my communication with Jan at Bluestone, I am now revising my review to Positive. Apparently there should have been something enclosed with the order to give a heads-up that the Amsonia was on back order until Fall, and giving a choice of waiting for it, or receiving a credit or refund. In view of the resolution of the issue, a new order was placed for Fall delivery of additional plants. Thank you for your help, Jan!
On April 6th, 2021, proserpine changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following: This is the third time in as many years of recent ordering from Bluestone that NO emailed shipment notification was sent. Once again, "surprise!" : a large box sitting on the front steps which had likely been sitting there (in the sun) all day. Every other nursery that I have placed on online order from, has been capable ot sending some kind of shipment notification so that the recipient gets a heads up and can make arrangements (such as, perhaps, leaving a note for the driver to put the box in a specific shaded and/or not easily visible spot!) accordingly. But this is not the first time this has happened with Bluestone. And not only to me. My son has ordered from Bluestone for the past two years and guess what, he was surprised by the shipment appearing with no advance notice either. This happened with orders placed before the pandemic was even a thing (2019) so it's not just a one-off slip-up. I never received a "confirmed shipping schedule" email as the original (March, in this case) order confirmation email said there would be. And in any case...again... other nurseries often give a shipping window early on but still send an email saying "Your plants have been shipped" and GIVING A TRACKING NUMBER. Bluestone, apparently, cannot. No "your plants have shipped" email. No tracking number. It's very frustrating!
On April 6th, 2021, proserpine added the following: As long as I am venting, I have to confess that I absolutely hate those coir pots. I understand that they are easier for propagators but in reality, they take forever (if ever) to break down under normal garden conditions; many plants tend to become rootbound in them; and if they are planted with any of the top rim above the surface (or if the surrounding soil settles and produces the same effect) they can wick water away from the interior soil/roots. So I end up removing the plants from the coir pot before planting. Thankfully, none of the other nurseries I order from use these pots. I wish Bluestone would go back to plastic.

Hello proserpine - I am sorry you have had such a difficult time reaching us! You are not alone and we are frustrated, too! This is not the way we typically do business. This spring saw a surge of demand that we were/are unable to keep up with. We are a small staff, and have been, and continue to be, inundated. Unfortunately, I have no way to know who you are in this forum, but you are welcome to correspond with me directly [email protected] Please give me an order number or your name and address so that I can begin to make things right. I suspect your original packing sheet had an indication that the Amsonia is backordered to fall (usually some highlighting indicates the backorder). This would typically happen if we had come up short on a plant unexpectedly due to a crop problem which was the case with both of the Amsonia we carry this year. I will have the plants this fall to send you, but a refund is understandable as well - it\'s up to you. I hope you will be in touch,
On Apr 7, 2021 9:35 AM, Bluestone Perennials added:
Hello proserpine - Thanks for reaching out. After hearing from you and many others yesterday, we discovered the problem with the recent order and shipping confirmations and they are now flowing again. Our apologies. I am sorry you dislike the coir fiber pots but please know that it does not harm the plants if you choose to carefully remove the pot. Another option is a compromise - I will sometimes cut the top inch or so off the pot before planting to eliminate any worry (or view) of the pot ever sticking out of the ground. This eliminates potential transplant shock, too, as you are not disturbing the roots that are growing through the pot. I hope this helps.

I came to Dave's Garden to look up the reputation of a new mail-order nursery that I'm planning to buy from, and to gauge that company's reputation I compared it to Bluestone, from whom we've purchased some large orders a few times in the past 6 or 7 years. I was surprised to see the negative comments, which I'll assume were due to lockdowns, etc. We're about to order another few hundred dollars worth of plants from Bluestone because we've been very happy with the plants they've sent in the past, and their response when we once had a problem plant. Everything that we planted from our first order half a decade ago is still doing well, and to be honest, we're pretty lazy gardeners - we dig the hole, add lawn fabric and mulch, and water the first year and then the plants are on their own.

This is my second order from Bluestone, and both have been exceptional. The first, tulip bulbs last fall, yielded beautiful tulips this spring. And that was far from guaranteed given that it was my first time planting tulips. The second order is more recent, a number of perennials that I will be planting shortly in a new bed. I have more experience with perennials, and I was impressed with the health, size, and packing of all dozen or so plants. In addition, Bluestone's customer service is outstanding--for example, they allow additions and substitutions until delivery, which proved crucial as I was planning my new bed. All in all, a great experience. I will be a repeat customer.

Received tiny, dried out seriously wilted plants and a box full of loose dirt. The roots were nearly entirely bare and bone dry. One plant is still struggling to recover. I planted them all as soon as I could get them rehydrated and acclimated to my garden. One remained wilted, the rest are in stasis, showing almost no growth. I doubt they will survive the winter. Not worth the price compared to the plants I got at the local nurseries which were far cheaper, a lot larger, much more vigorous and took off beautifully after they were planted. The coconut hull pots dry out too much in transit and the roots end up bare seriously damaging the plants and making a HUGE spilled soil mess when you open the box. I canceled the rest of my order and received a refund after I submitted photos of the pathetic plants I paid a premium price to get.

Ordered 2 grasses. They were dry as a bone and so tiny. They should be ashamed of themselves for the money they charged. Other online suppliers send 5x the size for the same species and price. Literally one of the plants had 3 blades of grass. What a joke. I have ordered before from them and it was just ok but this is ridiculous. Learned my lesson with them. Off the list.

I ordered some perennial plants this spring. The plants were small, but very healthy and arrived when expected. The plantable “pots” are pretty neat, and my clay soil needs all the aeration it can get, so that was a plus. Most of the plants “took” very well, though some haven’t been liking the soggy August we’ve had. I also appreciate their customer service. I ordered more plants for fall, and one of them ran out of stock. The company reached out to me to see if I’d like a replacement. Overall, a very positive experience!

I ordered plants plants on April 16 - all plants were in stock. After not hearing from them I emailed and was told week of May 11, I received one plant out of four, the other three being Hidcote lavender. I emailed again - no reply and tried calling several times (always after 1 pm), line was always busy. Finally got through on June 4th to find out they were out of the lavender and it would then be shipped in the Fall. Not what I wanted - I received a refund, but not an email informing me at an earlier date that the lavender was not available. I understand that Covid interrupted normalcy, but communication via email is extremely doable. Very disappointed.

In early spring we hired some help to build a new perennial bed in our garden, approximately 7 x 20. We decided to place a major order from Bluestone--3 each of a variety of plants not available, or not the variety, from our usual excellent local nursery (that grows most of their plants). The plants arrived in great condition with the exception of the echinacea. Six weeks after planting the results are exceptional-the salvia, veronica, hollyhocks, gaillardia, rudbeckia, geranium and other echinacea are doing beautifully. We are extremely pleased. I noticed the negative reviews about "contact". They had sent us an email about being overwhelmed--I have a small business and this year I completely understand. A few days ago they contacted us that they has shipped 2 echinacea at no charge. We have are avid, not master gardeners, but have been at it here from almost 25 years and I would put Bluestone in the front rank of online nurseries.

Trusting the reviews on here, I ordered 21 plants from Bluestone this year. They arrived well-packed, in good shape. I especially appreciate that they come in biodegradable pots -- I wish more suppliers would do this. Yes, Bluestone is expensive. I wouldn't recommend them for the common plants you can easily find in your local nursery. But for more hard-to-find plants, I recommend them highly, and intend to order from them again.

Last year I bought Veronica pink marshmallow. I planted it next to a fully grown Veronica pink marshmallow. They got the same light, water, etc. It died. I notified the company & they did replace it in the fall. It was small, I planted it following instructions & it didn’t come back at all. But this one takes the cake - I ordered 3 rose campion plants. I planted them & they grew. At least, the foliage did. I kept waiting for flowers, but they never came. At the end of the season - still no flowers. I took a photo & google imaged it. No wonder there were no flowers - they were lambs ears! They weren’t rose campion at all. I also bought Rosie poise agastache. It was small & didn’t come back this year. It’s in full sun.

Hello hamptons - I hope you will give us a chance to make amends. If you will be in touch, we would be happy to send another V. Pink Marshmallow. Re: the Rose Campion - I hope you didn't pull them out, but I would be happy to send 3 more. I am soldout this spring but I could send them in the fall - or something else now if you would prefer. I still have A. Rosie Posie and could send one as well. Please email me directly at [email protected]. Be well, Jan

Last summer I placed an advance order for Phlox Blue Paradise, to be shipped this month. With shipping, I paid $22.90. It arrived right on schedule, and was securely packed. However, I received a tiny plant with a single stem. The plant itself is healthy and I think it will grow in strong over time, but for more than $20 I was expecting a lot more than this itty bitty plug.

I apologize for the size of the plant you were sent. It should not have gotten shipped, most likely, due to its size. If you are dissatisfied (if the plant has not seen substantial growth), please be in touch with our customer service folks - [email protected] or with me directly - [email protected] and we can reship this fall or refund if you prefer. I hope to hear from you - Jan

I have ordered bulbs and live plants from Bluestone Perennials in the past couple of years. I would say everything has arrived alive and healthy. Good customer service, very friendly. I have to say, only buy from here if you're needing a plant you can't locate locally. The plants do arrive very small (3.5 in pots), but healthy. They are also very expensive and the shipping can be costly. Keep your eye open for sales, sometimes they'll have 50% off sales, which makes ordering from them a little more reasonable.

Posted on May 6, 2018, updated April 21, 2020 Posted on June 9, 2012, updated May 6, 2018 Posted on September 3, 2011, updated June 9, 2012 Posted on May 26, 2011, updated September 3, 2011 Today I received my order from Bluestone's Spring Sale (saved a LOT!): thyme "Annie Hall", Phlox "David", crested iris "Powder Blue Giant", campanula "Elizabeth Oliver", oenothera "Sunset Blvd", eupatorium "Wayside", and coreopsis "Sweet Dreams": all look terrific. In late April I received another order in perfect shape; I order from BP usually at least 3 times a year. My garden has been built from the ground up from their catalog- 75%, I'd say. I know I can count on Bluestone for excellent plants and outstanding service. The recycling program helps a lot with shipping costs, and is well worth it!
On September 3rd, 2011, lisaaj added the following: I just receiving a mailing from Bluestone that they would not be able to ship the plant (backordered from my Spring order), and a refund check. Fair enough. What blows my mind is that they ALSO enclosed a voucher for a free plant! Once again they go above and beyond. I am interested in trying their new coco-fiber potted plants, and this is my chance to do it!
On June 9th, 2012, lisaaj added the following: I received a Bluestone order in April 2012 (1 helleborus "bicolor mix", 2 pieris "Passion", 1 geranium "Orkney Cherry", 2 salvia "Plumosa", 2 mum "Matchsticks", and 1 hydrangea "Blue Bunny". They also included a free plant (I had a coupon for one), a cardinal flower, which I had actually come close to ordering, so it was perfect. All are thriving in my garden now. Received and planted 2 columbines "Songbird Cardinal" and 1 daylily "Raspberry Pixie" this week from the big sale, all great. The new larger size plants in coco pots seem much more likely to survive; with the 3packs, the cheaper price was offset by the tendency of one of them to not make it, at times. They still have terrific coupons and amazing end-of-season sales the last week of May and I think also at the end of their fall season.
On May 5th, 2018, lisaaj added the following: I moved to a new house in January, and was delighted to take advantage of BP’s Friday sales on select perennials in the winter months. There are deer in my new neighborhood, so I was really looking for deer resistant plants. I got in the biggest plant shipment of my life last week, and have been having the best time planting all these little guys! They all have fantastic root systems, and I saved a ton of money on getting my brand new garden started. Thanks, Bluestone!
On April 21st, 2020, lisaaj added the following: I received three large boxes of beautiful perennials from Bluestone last week- they arrived in one day and were ‘fresh as a daisy’! The quality is exceptional. I added several plants right before shipping, and they got the order exactly right. These plants have excellent root systems and always settle into my garden very well. You can’t go wrong with Bluestone!

I have done business with bluestone perennials in the past, the plants were acceptable at the time for something i couldn't find locally. However I just received their new catalog and can't believe how ridiculous the prices are for a tiny plant grown in a 3.5 inch pot, plus shipping! There are many other vendors out there that offer larger quality plants at a much better price! I will not being doing business with bluestone again any time in the near future.

Posted on March 31, 2020, updated April 18, 2020 We ordered an ornamental grass and waited several weeks for it be shipped, which was fine. I understand that weather does put certain necessary limits on shipping time. What I didn't expect was that the two specimens that I ordered (order came to $50, but we were unable to find this particular grass anywhere else) would arrive with barely four or five green shoots amid dried, dead ones. My husband looked at them and said: "I paid THAT much for a few strands of grass??" I certainly expected robust, healthy plants, not what arrived, completely dried out with literally, less than a dozen green shoots between both pots. We have mail ordered plants from other nurseries before and were always pleasantly surprised at the quality. Live and learn.
On April 18th, 2020, Mer52 changed the rating from negative to positive and added the following: I was contacted with an apology about the condition of the plants we received. Bluestone Perennials offered a full refund, which I appreciated. (My husband had paid for the plants and was quite upset at what we received.) This company went further than a refund, however. Today I received two more of the same plant and this time, was delighted to find two small but healthy, viable plants! Excellent customer service and follow-through. We are extremely happy and very impressed. Thanks so much

Sorry to hear of your disappoint, Mer52. The grass you received is dormant, and should have had a dormant sticker on it telling you that it is 'just waking up'. We are in NE Ohio and still have a chance of snow here, so some of the warmer season grasses are 'just' startingi to put up their growth. Now that it is in your warmer climate it will start to grow in earnest. Please give it a few weeks and let us know if you are still disappointed, and we can refund. I apologize that info was left off your plants. You are welcome to contact me directly - Jan [email protected]

I purchased from Bluestone 8 times last year and am already looking to purchase more plants this year. I find the "50% off" sales to be irresistible. Otherwise, the regular prices seem to be a bit high. The packaging is top notch and the plants arrive in good condition. Overall the plants have been healthy and good sized and with good root systems. I'm in Vermont and it seems that the plants arrive quickly. Once I contacted customer service about a very small and weak clematis and they did send a replacement. Several of the plants were sold out in the spring and they sent them in the fall, which was a bit of an inconvenience. I really appreciate the wide selection, and the sale prices are lower than my local garden centers, although I shop there as well. The website is probably the best in the business -- easy to navigate with lots of information, and the "plant finder" tool helps me quickly find tall or shade-loving plants. The catalog is also informative. Also, you can move plants to the "save for later" section of the website easily, unlike other company's websites. They also automatically combine your orders, which I think brings down the shipping costs. I think a "full box" is 18 plants, but I'm not sure. I have always removed the plants from the coco pots as my soil is a heavy clay and I felt that the clay plus the coco would create an impenetrable barrier and the roots would never escape the pot and also that the coco might wick the water out of the soil in the summer when it dries out. I planted everything last year and most everything survived until winter; some plants like the boltonia and the rudbekia grew like gangbusters, but some plants dried out (my fault) and many others never seemed to do much (again, probably my fault.) This year I will report back what has survived the winter, and with more detailed notes of how plants arrive from the company. Also, I may try leaving the plants in the coco pots. Overall I feel like the company is honest, dependable and responsible and I have never felt cheated or tricked, which has happened with other companies. The plants arrive in very good condition, and any problems after that are probably my fault. We'll see how it goes this year.

I’m going against the grain here because I see most people have rave reviews about Bluestone. I was tempted to give a neutral review under some sort of peer pressure mentality but my husband told me I have to be honest and so I’m leaving a negative review. I ordered a couple hundred dollars worth of shade perennials from Bluestone this spring. I ordered from Bluestone because of Dave’s garden watchdog. I have benefited so much from these reviews in general and was excited looking forward to some great astilbe, dicentra, columbine and ferns from Bluestone. The first batch of plants arrived very dry and stressed out, but given the long distance we are from Bluestone, I didn’t complain (we are in rural eastern WA Cascades). I watered the plants immediately upon arrival following the instructions that came with the plants and hoped for the best. Thinking it wouldn’t happen again, especially given the great reviews, I ordered another batch that were partially dead on arrival from lack of water. The coir pots that Bluestone uses accelerated drying, I think, and we are in a very dry climate. Plus I was astonished that the plants from Bluestone were shipped so slowly. They were in transit for 5 to 7 or more days! I contacted Bluestone and they very promptly shipped replacement plants. However, I’d much rather receive healthy, lovely plants from the beginning and spare myself the trouble (and environmental waste) of having replacement plants shipped. The reason I am only now leaving a negative review is that it is September, soon to be October frosts, and the plants from Bluestone have only struggled at best. I want to blame the coir pots but would have to dig up the struggling plants to check, and I haven’t done that. I waited to give a review because I wanted to give the plants a chance to recovery, but they have fared poorly compared to other plants I put in nearby locations this spring. I stared native columbines from seed this winter that are doing better than the Bluestone columbines. Also, astilbe I purchased at local nurseries are doing better, as are plants I ordered from Annie’s (who I highly recommend for people in the western US). The Annie’s plants are gorgeous right now. For the Bluestone plants, from the get-go I hated the pots. As I said I think they dried out the plant roots during shipping and I suspect they bind up the plant roots. One thing I liked about Annie’s is that Annie’s used plastic pots which are more moisture retentive plus Annie’s wraps the soil surface with wax paper. (I reuse all of my plastic pots for years, even decades, for seed starting and transplants so I have relatively little heartburn about buying plants (in small quantities) in plastic pots.) I do want to note for the record that I am an experienced gardener - we grow all our own veggies year round, plus cut flowers in generous proportions for ourselves an neighbors in the growing season. Bluestone may work well for folks in the Midwest and east where conditions are wetter, and closer to their nursery, but for us the Bluestone plants did not work well. I do not plan to order any additional plants from this company unless I know that they package their plants better (to withstand drying conditions, and those awful coir pots) and ship their plants faster. It is a bummer because Bluestone has such a nice selection.

Please be in touch with us so that we can send replacements on those items that are struggling - either immediately or in the spring if you prefer. A refund is also an option. Re: the pots: You are welcome to remove the top half or all of the coir pot if you prefer, and perhaps in your dry situation it might be helpful. Removing the pots can damage some of the roots, but it usually only sets the plant back by a week or two - it will soon catch up. I fear one of your shipments was too long in transit, and I hope you will try us again and/or let us make up for your disappointing experience.

Posted on July 3, 2019, updated July 3, 2019 Posted on June 15, 2019, updated July 3, 2019 The 12 Carex flaccosperma plants I ordered from Bluestone arrived in lovely condition. Plus, they were, by far, the most professionally-packed flora I have ever received via delivery. It was almost mind-boggling how well they were packed. It’s been a few weeks since I planted all 12, and nine are doing great. One, however, appears to be giving up the ghost and two others are iffy. I sent an email with this info to Bluestone yesterday and asked for them to please advise. Today, I received a very friendly response stating that a replacement shipment of three plants is already in the works and, indeed, four minutes later I received formal notification that the three replacement plants will be shipped next week AND … at no charge to me! In my world, this sort of stellar customer service is rarely seen or experienced anymore. Bluestone has shot straight to the top of my list for any online flora for which I may be in the market.
On July 3rd, 2019, SactoMan added the following: A follow-up to my June 15 post: The three iffy plants had unexpectedly perked up by the time my three (beautiful) replacement plants arrived, so I left the three original ones in place and planted the three replacements elsewhere. I emailed Bluestone advising them of what had happened and told them to charge me for the three new “replacement” plants (plus shipping, too, of course). I quickly thereafter received a very friendly reply thanking me for informing Bluestone of what had happened but that no payment whatsoever was needed for the new plants. I was pretty gobsmacked. This is one classy company.

Bluestone Perrenials has become my go to for plants I cannot find or are out of stock locally. I ordered 5 different shipments this year over 30 plants and every single plant came in fabulous condition and are doing extremely well. I also love that they come in biodegradeable pots and that they ship with recyclable materials.

I have been searching for a better way to buy perennials. Their website is great, but the product is even bette and I've had many poor experiences elsewhere. I'll admit I live in the same state as Bluestone, but I've received multiple orders the next day and by the health of the plants, they must have been packed immediately before shipping. I could say "it's as if I just picked them up at the garden center" but the truth is, the quality of the plants is so consistently great, it's BETTER than any garden center.....it's not crowded and you have not only the information on their website but the power of the internet to research in the comfort of home..

I love this company. I've only been using them for 3 years because that's when I found them online. I usually order 4-5 times each season . They are awesome for communication, they have replaced 3 plants that didn't make it through the winter and should have. The prices are good, their plants are outstanding, shipping is 2 days max, customer service is awesome, need I go on. Highly recommend!

Because of the detailed feedback, I confidently ordered, and today received my first order from Bluestone. I purchased 33 plants and the quality is excellent. They are smaller that the plants one would purchase at a nursery, but I would say that they are the same size as the far more expensive White Flower Farm plants. I usually grow my own plants from seed, only buying what I cannot grow, so I am accustomed to robust plants, and these are. And some of the varieties I purchased, such as Heuchera Firefly and Heucherella Bridgett's Bloom, are usually quite expensive. And the prices! Taking advantage of some specials and 3 for 1 offfers, I paid $98.75 for 33 plants - including shipping - less than $3.00 a plant! Receiving an e-mail and a UPS tracking number was an unexpected plus. Another bonus - did anyone notice that the plants are hardened off when you receive them? They note that they can be exposed to temperatures as low as 26 degrees. What a great company! They are my first stop from now on.
On August 1st, 2003, DonnaMack added the following: After I printed the above I ordered additional plants from Bluestone, and continue to be impressed. Of the total of 49 plants I put in, 49 took! I put in arabis, a spring blooming plant, and it bloomed in summer, and has spread considerably. The verbena Homestead Purple, Heucherella, Tiarella, and most of the others actually bloomed. Some look like mature plants, blooming with no restraint. I installed all of them in May and June! I'm working on my fall order. These guys are incredible.
On May 14th, 2007, DonnaMack added the following: I have ordered annually each year since my above review, and have been pleased with my orders, but my most recent experience with the company was the best thus far. I was having trouble entering coupon codes, so I called and spoke with a wonderful representative who explained to me the numbers on the codes and then offered to take my order over the telephone. This was very much to my advantage, because she (I'm so sorry I did not get her name) repeatedly brought specials to my attention of which I was unaware. The result was that I received 12 free plants. My order came yesterday and every plant was healthy and viable. I also received a HUGE primula Japonica (much larger than my favorite local nursery) as a replacement for a plant that was mistakenly labeled as such last year. Better yet, I was given a delivery confirmation from Fed Ex, and my plants were delivered as promised on the afternoon of May 12, the day before Mother’s Day (what a tough day to keep a delivery commitment!). And our last frost date in zone 5a is May 15. Perfect. I cannot imagine how this entire transaction could have been better.
On June 2nd, 2012, DonnaMack added the following: I had hesitated to purchase from Bluestone this season, given the comments and the higher prices. But they sent me an email about discounted items, and I could not resist trying them again, so I ordered a few plants. I must say that I was very pleased with the quality of the plants. I found that the roots were somewhat embedded in the coir so I could not remove it, but the fact that they had grown into and in some places through the coir is a good sign. I also had a free shipping code from three years ago - and they honored it! I will be back.
On April 27th, 2013, DonnaMack added the following: I must say that I am very happy with Bluestone this year. I ordered all half price plants in January: 3 Campanula Bellringers, 2 Penstemon digitalis 'Husker Red', a panicum and 2 Fothergilla Mt. Airy shrubs. The plants are just excellent. The qualuty is very high. They are of nice size. I remove the coir immediately because I have trouble cutting it away - and the soil was dry. But the plants are perfect!
On April 27th, 2014, DonnaMack added the following: I took advantage of Bluestone sales from December on to order quite a few plants. I didn't realize how many until they came a few days ago. I must admit that I consistently cut the plants out of the coir pots. But I actually gasped when my order came. The plants are much bigger than they were a few years ago, and the quality is better than my expensive garden center, which I visited after I received them, in order to buy compost and mulch. I no longer need to hold them for transplanting - they are eye catching. But what I really love was the ability to pay for each order and have it "held". So I got pristine fresh, large plants while paying ONE shipping cost for plants ordered in December, January, March and April. It actually allowed me to buy much more than I would have if I had ordered them all at once, and there was a single shipping charge. I had concerns about Bluestone a little while back, but the quality of the plants, the Friday specials (dangerous) and excellent shipping have made me a believer again.
On April 29th, 2015, DonnaMack added the following: I received a very nice order from Bluestone. The plants I received were great, as usual. but one item was eliminated from my order, that being athyrium nipponicum 'Ursulas Red', a very hard to find plant. I was particularly disappointed because it was on special, and after I ordered two the special on this plant continued for several days. So my perception is that they either gave my plants to someone else, or they did not monitor their inventory. They did give me a refund check for the two plants, which I very much appreciated, as well as a coupon for a free plant. The other plant they could not provide, Anemone Alice, was is on backorder, which is fine. I was able to order the fern from Forest Farm, where I have an open order and was actually able to fill a box so there will be no additional shipping. I leave my rating as positive because I truly think that they stepped up after this error. A check for the plants, an explanation that Alice is coming in the fall, and a free ground cover plant make my overall experience with Bluestone quite positive.
On May 30th, 2015, DonnaMack added the following: I just received and planted three excellent ceratostigma plumbaga (plumbago) that was part of their end of season sale. From the wonderful quality of the plants, you would never know it. True, I always cut away the coir, but doing that only shows me clearly the excellent quality of the plants.
On October 2nd, 2015, DonnaMack added the following: I mentioned in my update of April 29 that I had been disappointed that I had not received a athyrium nipponicum 'Ursula's Red' that I had ordered. Bluestone sent me a coupon for one free plant. Talk about disappointment tuning into bliss! I ordered a helleborus "Rose Quarta' and I just received it. I couldn't be happier. It is a gorgeous plant, and the cost of it is much higher than my original request. Plants like this will keep me coming back year after year! And I received my anemone Alice a few weeks back. Nice healthy plants that are increasing. Excellent!
On April 29th, 2016, DonnaMack added the following: Last year I received a coupon for a free plant from Bluestone, and took the opportunity to order a helleborus. Impressed, I order two more to make it a trio. Well, I just received enormous ones from Bluestone, for which I only paid half of the regular price. I walked away from plants in my garden center that were the same size but cost 3 times as much. They have truly won my respect over these last few years. I still ditch the coir - but wow, what plants!
On September 17th, 2017, DonnaMack added the following: I recommended Bluestone as a source for Aralia 'Sun King', a plant I own and adore. She ordered three, and I planted them for her today. How good were they? Gorgeous. I was proud that I made the recommendation, and my client was very impressed.
On June 7th, 2019, DonnaMack added the following: I placed several late season sale orders. Sometimes I hesitate to do this, because I am concerned about the quality of the plants. Not so with Bluestone. The plants were great, filled in some holes (and fulfilled some new wishes) and I will never hesitate to do this again.

Posted on May 22, 2013, updated June 2, 2019 I have ordered from Bluestone for at least 5 years now. Their customer service has always been top notch. Any time I had a problem with any order they rectified the situation immediately and pleasantly. I am sad they are not in the Top 30. For the most part I have been very happy with their plants. There are a few plants I had repeated trouble growing, but I wrote it off to my conditions. Also, I enjoy taking a road trip and going directly to the nursery to shop. It took me a bit to adjust to the new coir pots/single plant system. I have learned I get better results if I remove the coir pot entirely immediately when I get the plants. Often I do not plant my gems right away and they would dry out too fast in the coir pots for me. And if I planted with the coir pot I found it did not break down fast enough and the plant suffered in the ground. Clearly though it works great for growing the plants as effidenced by the two orders I received from them this year. WOW! Gorgeous healthy plants. I am so very pleased!
On June 2nd, 2019, jvw added the following: It is 2019 and I continue to order from Bluestone EVERY year. Literally THE best customer service of ANY mail order company! Top notch plants. And, if you are not happy with your plant or plants they simply ask if you want a replacement or credit. No treating you like you are an idiot, no telling you to plant it and see what happens, no excuses (High Country Gardens you could really learn a lesson here). This year I had plants in my cart while I waited for a gift certificate from my brother. I got an email from them reminding me I had not finished the order. I replied I was waiting until I got my GC. The next day I received my GC via automated email. But I also received a personal email letting me know the GC was ready and the code number to use it. I will continue to order every year from them!

I placed 2 large orders of perennials with Bluestone totaling over $400. They shipped together even though I placed them 3 weeks apart, which I was very happy about. The plants shipped and were delivered two days later, They were well packaged and all very healthy. I appreciate the coir pots and everything has been in the ground for a week and looks good. I was worried about mail ordering plants but now will order from Bluestone with confidence.

I'm new to this, but it was sure easy...great experience!
On May 12th, 2019, south_girl added the following: Update a year later: Having occasionally used other online nurseries, my positive impression of Bluestone has increased even more. Their patience with my beginner questions, quick follow-up, fast delivery, careful packaging, superior labeling of plants, and their year guarantee make dealing with them a delight.

First order from them. I was impressed they shipped order 2 days after I submitted it. Not many will do that. Plants packed in specialized box to keep them secure. Also like biodegradable "pot" - plant it also. Keeps root disturbance to a minimum. Plants were a little small for the price but looked healthy.

The plants I have received from them are well started, nice and green, in pots with well-developed root systems. So much better than those I've gotten from some other mail-order nurseries. The plants in my Bluestone order are also very good sized. There are a few varieties that I would like to see them include in future catalogs that aren't in current ones, but the quality of what I've gotten can't be beaten! Bluestone Perennials is a keeper.
On May 8th, 2015, flowermaiden2 added the following: My experience with Bluestone Perennials continues to be positive. My large order arrived, today, correct and complete, with healthy, robust plants. The Violas are blooming, and they are lovely. My only concern is those fiber pots they insist upon sending them in. I have removed those in the past and shall do so, again. They're supposed to be biodegradable and decompose right inside the planting hole, over time. I fear this will take too long, and the plants will remain rootbound in the meantime. I like to spread out the roots when I plant, so they can have plenty of room in which to grow. It's really not a lot of trouble to remove those fiber pots -- I just score vertically down each corner and off they come. Bluestone was very good about letting me add to my order as I found more plants later on that I wanted, so I would only have to pay shipping once. They're also very good about keeping me updated on the status of my order. Good company. I shall continue ordering from them in seasons to come.
On May 13th, 2016, flowermaiden2 added the following: This season, I ordered two types of coryopsis from them. I was glad to find some taller varieties that bloom yellow instead of reddish shades. My plants arrived today, and they are bushy, green and well developed. I shall remove them from the fiber pots, however, and plant them directly into the soil, as I have previously done. I feel they have less risk of becoming root bound that way, even though it's claimed those pots are "biodegradable". Do they break down soon enough to avoid binding the roots? Since I'm not sure of this, I always take them out. I love coryopsis because deer don't eat them, and that's a real plus in my garden, which Bambi has used as a smorgasbord in the past. Again, Bluestone has come through for me, shipping my order on the date I requested. Very happy with them, as usual.
On May 14th, 2016, flowermaiden2 added the following: For the benefit of those who might wish to try this lovely perennial, the name of the flowers I ordered is coreopsis, not coryopsis. I misspelled them the first time. Wanted to make the correction here, so folks using their catalog or shopping online will know what to look for should they seek these out. These are great for gardens with a deer problem, as deer tend to steer clear of them. I've just planted all of mine, and they look great. A couple even arrived with flower buds on them. Kudos, again, to Bluestone Perennials.
On September 13th, 2016, flowermaiden2 added the following: So far, so good. Despite being in transit via UPS for six days, the Early Sunrise Coreopsis are huge and healthy. So are the Electric Blue Penstamon. The Paprika Yarrows didn't look great, but still have some green on them, and may make it, afterall. I've planted everything immediately after receiving it. Again, I removed the coir pots to give the roots a chance to grow directly into the soil. I still have some bulbs coming, which won't arrive until the end of September. That's of concern because, one, I'll be out of town from the 27th until October 2nd, and two, we might very well have snow on the ground by then. If they have my bulbs, they should send them, now. I'll be calling them to see what they can do, if anything.
On October 7th, 2016, flowermaiden2 changed the rating from positive to neutral and added the following: The five Paprika Yarrows I ordered appear to have completely died. They were in transit for SIX WHOLE DAYS, via UPS. At first, I thought they might make it, as there was still a very tiny smigeon of green on them. Now that's gone. I planted them immediately upon opening the box I got from the UPS driver. After that amount of time, I figured I'd best get them into the ground right away. I planted them in well-drained, enriched soil and watered them immediately. I very carefully removed the coir pots and gently spread out their roots for maximum benefit of receiving nutrients, trying to give them the best chance possible. They have been frequently watered since them, either by heavy rains or by my sprinkler. The soil is rich and drains well, so there's no issues of root rot. Their foliage is now completely gray-brown and they show no signs of life. My STRONG suggestion to Bluestone Perennials is that they use a carrier that can deliver orders much faster than UPS does. There's no excuse for it taking SIX WHOLE DAYS to deliver a live plant order. I'm certain that had they delivered it sooner, those yarrows would be looking a lot better. I am surprised to have had this experience with a Bluestone Perennial order. This has never happened, before. Please use a different carrier that provides faster service. Otherwise, I might have to look elsewhere for placing my plant orders.

On October 7th, 2016, flowermaiden2 changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following: Bluestone Perennials has earned another positive rating. I was pleasantly surprised, when I opened my e-mail inbox, to find an offer from them -- without being asked or even contacted -- to replace my five Papricka Yarrows next Spring, at no cost to me, not even shipping. This time, they've made a note to use FedEx instead of UPS, in the hope delivery time will be faster. FedEx is usually pretty good around here. They've also agreed to ship early to mid-May, which is the best time in my area to begin planting in Spring. It's so nice when a company makes things right without even having to be asked to do so. I wish more companies would provide that kind of service. Good for you, Bluestone!
On May 26th, 2017, flowermaiden2 added the following: True to their word, they have sent the replacements for last year's dead yarrows, and these are NICE! I also ordered three Royal Blue Veronicas this year, which have come in the same box, and are also nice. Very well packed, and ready to go. Bluestone Perennials has come through, again. A truly dependable company.
On September 1st, 2017, flowermaiden2 added the following: I am thrilled! My entire Fall order arrived today, and every plant in it is large, robust and green. Some of the Early Sunrise Coreopsis even have buds on them. A couple of the Coreoposis have powdery mildew on a few of their leaves, but that's easy to deal with. I'll just clip those leaves off and dispose of them. They'll have plenty of greenery left. I've opened the box and have watered everything in a nice shady outdoor area, and when it cools off this evening, they'll go into the ground. I have their special spots all prepared for them with plenty of compost mixed into the soil. So late in the season, I wasn't expecting such nice, robust plants -- these are as nice as the ones I got last Spring. Very good, Bluestone! (I'll be removing those fiber pots again, as a matter of personal choice, but that won't hurt anything as long as it's done carefully).
On May 18th, 2018, flowermaiden2 added the following: WOW! I had a HUGE order this time, and everything arrived full, large and green. I have them out of the boxes and into trays in the light, and I've watered them well. Bluestone has come through again. Delivered right to my door, right on time as the tracking date said. This is why I continue to order every season from Bluestone. I know I can trust what I'll be getting to be healthy and robust. I will remove the coir pots, though, to give the roots plenty of space to spread out in the ground. Good work, Bluestone Perennials!
On October 15th, 2018, flowermaiden2 added the following: Fall bulbs arrived in plenty of time for planting and are already in the ground. Nice, healthy bulbs, well before expected snowfall. Blue starflowers and some fritillarias, which I am trying for the first time. When they come up, they should be gorgeous. Good work, again, Bluestone.

Our apologies, flowermaiden2. Your order inadvertently was not shipped on the correct day. Please don't ever hesitate to call right away when your package arrives in poor condition. I have booked replacements to be shipped to you in the spring since you are in Idaho, but if you want to plant still this Fall, we can have them leave here Monday. I ordered some Eranthis bulbs and tulip bulbs as well as a potted Hellebore. Bluestone was running a free bulb promotion with an order so I got the free bulbs too. Shipping was lightning fast. Nice healthy bulbs and potted Hellebore. I expected the free bulbs to be a few crocus or something similar but they are huge 'Avalon' daffodils. Very happy with my purchase. I plan on making more purchases from Bluestone as my budget allows.

Posted on July 5, 2017, updated July 17, 2018 Posted on June 17, 2017, updated July 5, 2017 I ordered two clematis plants on sale. Upon receipt only one was shipped; the other is back ordered until Fall. I would have liked to have had the option to purchase one available now. The one I did receive is in a terrible state with only one viable leaf. About five years ago I placed a number of orders with Bluestone and my puppies killed all the plants trying to eat the coconut liners. I decided to try them again knowing to take the liners off. They have many unique varieties I would like to try but am hesitant after this experience. I've emailed them and am awaiting a response.
On July 5th, 2017, Schwager changed the rating from neutral to positive and added the following: Bluestone treated me well. They are shipping out a replacement and the originally ordered this fall. I am impressed.
On July 17th, 2018, Schwager added the following: Ordered again this spring. Out of the 7 plants I ordered all but one were in great shape. I tried to wait out the hydrangea that looked sad to no avail, but Bluestone issued a credit without any issue. I will keep ordering from them because of their guarantee.

Excellent company. Bought plants several times from them. Good size, good value and healthy plants. Really like the new biodegradable pots. Highly recommended.

My plants arrived by regular mail and left on my porch upside down,None of the plants were in their containers and were straggly tossed about the box amongst the scattered dirt. After reading so many positive reviews I really expected better.I wish they would use a better carrier than just regular postal mail.
