I am a fairly new gardener, especially in this location. My garden is organic - I dont use pesticides or chemical fertilizers. I have ordered from Raintree on two occasions, and went to Raintree once as well (about a 3 hour drive from my town).

in 2004, I ordered 3 grapes: Canadice, Interlaken, and Price. I chose these due to research that I had done about what grapes would do well in this climate. Despite only being about 1 foot tall when received, last year all had grown to over 8 feet tall. This year, I have about 20 bunches from Canadice, 10 bunches from Interlaken, and one grape on Price. They exten over the top of the 10 foot tall arbor that I buuilt for them over a deck. I didnt expect any grapes the second year already, but they are doing much better than my expectations.

The free Summit raspberry bore many berries last year and this year. I would not have bought a raspberry, but now it is one of my favorites.

in 2005, I ordered 2 gooseberries (collossal and Hinnonmaki yellow) and one grape (Venus), and on my trip there, bought another (Black velvet) as well as some dwarf apples. The grape did the same as the others the year before - it's now about 6 feet tall. The gooseberries have grown well. No berries this year but I dont expect them already. Also, a currrant bush. It is growing well, about 1 foot of growth on each of 3 new branches.

The items bought there in person were larger, but I was happy about the quality of the shipped plants and packing. One grape plant was broken and the free raspberry was broken as well, but neither seemed affected by that and they grew very well. I pruned off the broken parts on receipt.

I think that the cost is probably more than some other sources, but they are the only source that I could find for some of the varieties that I bought. Their growing information is very helpful. The item descriptions were very helpful.

I am sure that I will order some more from Raintree for 2006, although I dont know where they will be planted yet.

I was very pleasantly surprised at the size and health of the Black Velvet Gooseberries I ordered from Raintree!

Big, beautiful, healthy plants (and I got them on sale-to boot!) that showed no sign of shipping stress. Just in the few weeks they've been planted they are showing remarkable growth-I can't wait until next year when they might actually produce!

Nice job of packaging/wrapping to ensure safe, healthy and LIVE arrival. Unlike others-I didn't find their shipping charges to be at all exorbidant or high--actually pretty reasonable compared to some I've encountered!

I've already got two more gooseberry varieties and an apricot planned for next years order (and if I wasn't completely happy with my order-I would not be ordering again! Life (and summers here in Minnesota) is too short to waste on unhealthy, sickly, unhappy plants!.

I can't wait to order again from Raintree in 2006!

I waited to post my review until I was sure how the plants I ordered would fare. I ordered 4 bareroot winterberry hollies, 3 serviceberries, 3 carolina allspice and a paperbark maple from Raintree. All the plants have leafed out now and look like winners. Raintree included an extra holly and an extra maple (woohoo!). I was pleased with the quality of service and plants. The shipping was definitely expensive, and because of that, I will probably order from companies with the same products that are on the eastern side of the US. But I have nothing negative to say about my Raintree experience; it was great!

I had a very positive experience with Raintree Nursery.
My first order, last spring was three fruit trees and a filbert hedge (5 shrubs).
The trees were good sized, well branched and had a good growth in a year and I will get some fruits this summer.
Two of the filberts died and they sent me replacement this year with my second order, cranberry bush, aronia, goumis and huckleberry.
They are all doing well
The bonus plants are great, the strawberries are full of fruits after 6 weeks , strong and healthy.
They tell you when your order is shipped , they are nice on the phone and the packaging is well done.
I love them and cant' wait to order something else next spring!

I was so pleased that I've already placed another order for additional apple trees, blueberries, lilacs, etc. Also, the free raspberries included in my first order were some of the best bare root canes I've ever received from a company. Overall, I'm exceedingly satisfied!!

Received my 2nd shipment from Raintree & I am even more impressed than with my first shipment. 2nd shipment was for three apple trees (beautifully pruned, great root systems and ready to bud), blueberry bush (the largest & healthiest bush I've ever received from a company & I live in the blueberry capital of Michigan - Raintree provided me with a truely exceptional stock) & a lilac (again, in superb condition, laregr than I anticipated & starting to bud). I can't wait to place my next order...this is one of the best companies I've ever dealt with.

By the way, the apple trees from my 1st shipment (mid-May) are already leafed out, flowering & thriving.

After browsing Raintree's catalog, I decided my first purchase needed to be another 10 acres of land so I could plant everything my mouth was watering for.

Instead, I ordered a real tea plant (Camellia sinensis) and a real olive tree, both impossible to find in Portland OR area nurseries. I also added a black locust tree, for sentimental reasons.

What a thrill when the package arrived this March! I could not believe how big and bushy and well-established the tea and olive were. Let alone that they were packed so well that they came through with no damage at all. Both in 1-gallon pots, both fully leafed out, both 3 feet tall plus, with many leafy side branches.

Raintree also sent detailed instructions for harvesting and preparing both green tea and black tea, and I've made the green tea three times already, the bush was that big and has done so well in just a few short months. Boy, I used to think it was a thrill to eat an apple off my own trees; wait'll you serve tea to your friends from your own bush! Too cool. And tasty too.

The dormant bareroot black locust, the afterthought on my order, is leafed out and growing great. Now all I need are some red-headed woodpeckers, which I used to see foraging for the insects drawn to those honey-sweet blossoms....

I ordered many plants from them this Spring to start an orchard and fruit area. One grape did not leaf out and one branch on a multi-variety pear tree did not leaf out. I e-mailed asking if this should be a concern. They promptly said that both should have leafed out and are sending me replacements.

All the other plants (about fifteen) are doing beautifully.

After having negative experiences with other mail order nurseries I checked the garden watchdog and ordered through raintree after seeing all the positive comments regarding this nursery. The trees are so nice I placed another order for several serviceberry and elderberry bushes to establish and edible hedgerow. I bought three Mulberry trees from Ty ty in Georgia
2 years ago and was very dissappointed. Ty ty advertised 5 foot trees and sent me twigs about 2 feet tall and they still haven't grown much. Raintree sent me 4 to 5 foot trees as advertised and in the future I will order from them.

In March 2005 I ordered a Persimmon tree and a Pawpaw tree. The first thing I noticed was the excellent packaging. The two trees came in a triangular almost 5 foot long strong cardboard box and they were taped inside very securely. The trees were of very good quality and started growing in my yard within 10 days despite the fact that the persimmon came out of cold storage.
I called the company about a suitable pollinizer for the persimmon variety and they were very knowledgeable and forthcoming. The prices seem to be high at first, but considering the careful packaging and good quality of the trees, are actually a good deal, especially since the local nurseries around here charge about the same prices and I still have to drive there and mess up the car.
They also have a large selection of hard to find fruit trees.

I also received several roses, dogwoods, and maples free due to an internet promotion and these I expected to be rather small, but they were almost as big as the apples. Have you ever, after really too much deliberation, finally figured out how you're going to plant that little patch you've had your eye on for ages, then hit the nurseries to find that you can't locate the essential plants? Ugh. That was my reality.
I had chosen as the focal point a dwarf nectarine (my favorite fruit, outside of my husband). Problem was, nobody in town had one. I found a dwarf peach or two, but the were decidedly grown as shrubs more that standards. Bummer.
So I thought I'd give Raintree a try. I'd enjoyed their website for ages. I checked them out and found a grafted dwarf peach & nectarine combo listed. Cool. I called them up and bought it.
I must admit I was a little uppity about the $20 bucks charged for shipping & handling, but when it arrived yesterday, I could see it had been packed with bullet-proof care. Then I checked the bill: I had miscalculated and shipping was only $14. Very cool.
The specimen was indeed a standard form, as promised. A nice, thick, straight trunk and a healthy root ball. I'm in love. Bonus: each of the two grafts was clearly labelled, so I could decide where to place the peach side and where to place the nectarine side. I'd thought before I'd have to plunk it in the ground and figure that out come August.
I couldn't be happier with Raintree.

Wow. I didn't know what great plants look like until I finally ordered from Raintree. (I've got all these catalogs lying around, and I keep trying something from this company and that, trying to give them all a little of my business and rewarding those who have really earned my loyalty.)

I got asparagus crowns, a Rugosa rose Alba (a freebie!), and a jostaberry from Raintree. The asparagus looked like creatures from outerspace...huge dangling roots, very big and very healthy! The rose was about five times bigger than another rose I received from another company (that came as a whip) that I had paid a fair amount of money for, and of course it is doing better in the ground. But the jostaberry! It's big already and immediately started budding out when I planted it. Fantastic! How often are you really excited about something you ordered from an online nursery?

I couldn't be more pleased. Raintree is worth the little bit extra, believe me.

Raintree's catalog is very enticing, and they carry some really uncommon/interesting fruits that I want to try. Based on the condition of what I've received so far, I'll be ordering my hardy kiwis from them (probably next year; the ones I got this year from another company died) and trying a bunch of other things, too... I just have to be careful that my eyes don't get bigger than my stomach (or back, I should say).

I just received my first order from Raintree and I am very happy with it. I received a 'Mango' Pawpaw, 'Korean Giant' Asian Pear, and 'Pakistan' Mulberry. The pawpaw was shipped in its container and well packed. The other two trees were as long as the box- six feet or so. They are nice thick trees with the roots well packed. The box they were shipped in was very sturdy. I'm as impressed with their packing as I am with their product. With their 'zone skipping' you save on shipping costs, which would be much more for this size of a box. Raintree nursery will be getting another order from me next spring.

I have planted sea buckthorns, fruiting honeysuckles, dogwoods, Mt. Ash, Paw Paws, kiwis, aronias, and goumis. All have done very well except for the goumi. This is quite remarkable considering I live in a zone 4 and many of these fruiting plants are only marginal for this zone. Everything has always arrived in good shape, except for a honeysuckle which was bear root and never leafed out. The next spring they sent me a replacement which was in a container and did quite well.

The web site is very convenient for ordering and they always follow up with e-mail to confirm the order. They are also agreeable when I've called in to change an order. Prices are not great but I'd say reasonable. Expect some damage to trees when they are shipped as they are tightly bundled up, but hey, they're not shipping you one-year old whips either. These are branched and feathered younch trees that should produce some fruit two years after planting. And lastly, the trees they have shipped me have thrived and grown vigorously. They were obviously healthy well-grown specimens before being dug up and shipped. This year I'm going to pick up my order personally instead of having it shipped, I wanna visit their operation, which they encourage you to do.

Have ordered twice from this company. 25 strawberry, 3 blueberry on one order, my fault I ordered the wrong blueberry bush so ordered another on a seperate order. I'm zone 5 and ordered a Zone 6+ blueberry bush, no warning so it's up to you to make sure you order for your zone. I ordered "late" at discount.

Surprises were the order came with an invaluable "general" newspaper type magazine that has all types of tips for growing fruit tree's & berries, pruning, care, and maintenance. I found key advice on my blueberry bushes (need Ph of like 5!) and strawberries (also need acid PH and delicate balance of how deep to bury them). Out of the 26 strawberries only one didn't come to life immediately, a month later I dug it out and I had planted it upside down! My blueberry bushes from the two orders all came well packaged and amazingly healthy. They were all 2-3 feet tall, with many healthy stalks and root balls much bigger than normal just dying to take off. Almost immediately those huge root balls caused the stalks to shoot out massive amounts of leaves and branches and by far those blue berry plants from Raintree are the healthiest plants I own. I couldn't be happier, every day it's like all the new branches have grown an inch.

I'm very satisfied. Every one of my strawberries immediately threw out flowers & leaves (except the one I planted upside down), my blue berries I can't say enough about their health on arrival. Tip though, on the strawberries it's a balancing act on how high/low to put the strawberry plant. The ones I planted with the roots burried, but the old dried runners exposed put out leaves, then seem to give up and die. The ones I burried the runners are doing awesome. Raintree does say it's important in the "tip" newspaper about the delicate balance between how high you plant the strawberry in the dirt, and evidently if any of their root has exposure to the sun the plant dies... I should've realized that leaving those dead runners exposed might cause a problem, I think that's my fault but after figuring that out most are on their way to recovery, the ones I did bury from the get go are doing great! Wonderful company.
