This was my first year ordering from Hallson and i was a bit skeptical at first. But, I had no need to be. My first shipment was Sedum Matrona. They arrived bareroot but took off brilliantly in the yard and are doing amazing. I placed a second order during the lily sale and was so happy with my purchase. I will definitely be ordering from them again.

ordered a Holy Grail hibiscus (bare root) from them, a plant I saw in Michigan and had to have. It took awhile to root but is now putting on healthy new growth.

This is the second year in a row I've ordered from Hallson Gardens and I've been really happy with the plants they've sent. I was a bit leery ordering bare root but I think they have adapted better than the plants I've ordered in pots. The Platycodon I ordered were healthy and huge with great root systems. Everything was packed and marked well. Next year I'll try ordering a few more plants.

Last year I ordered some hardy Hibiscus (Hibiscus Moscheutos or Rose Mallow) from three different nurseries (Almost Eden, GrowJoy, Casita Azul). I posted reviews of these nurseries on this web site. This year I ordered some of the same Hibiscus from Hallson Gardens and the difference between the plants I ordered last year and those from Hallson Gardens was dramatic. Although the plants I ordered last year ranged in price from ($12 - 15), the difference in size and age of the plants from Hallson Gardens was huge even though the price was only slightly higher ($13 - 16). The plants I received last year were all very small starter plants, and some did not survive the winter due to their immature size. In contrast the plants from Hallson Gardens were large dormant clumps with well established root systems that will produce a mature plant this year. In contrast the plants from the other nurseries will require several years to produce a mature plant comparable in size to those from Hallson Gardens. In summary my future orders will be from Hallson Gardens.

Well, this is the second year I've ordered from these guys and it won't be the last. I've ordered perennials from some of the big mail order houses and the higher priced "high end" ones. Nothing compares to what this nursery offers: huge, healthy bareroot perennials that immediately establish and take off. From here on, if I want it and Hallson has it, that's where I'm ordering from.

Hallson Gardens has absolutely wonderful customer service. I received an order last week and one plant was bit soft and didn't look too good. I just emailed them on Tuesday and today is Thursday and my replacement plant is already in the ground! I usually buy plants from my local nursery or, when ordering mail order try to buy from a nursery that is closer in proximity. However, they had a plant that I could not find elsewhere, so I thought I would give them a try. They even give you a pen, and tell you to contact them right away if any there are any problems with the order. I was impressed! The rest of the order was just fine. I would order from them again.

I would like to add that their lily bulbs are outstanding. I usually order from lily specialists, and the bulbs I received are evry bit as excellent, at a very good price.
On June 29th, 2013, DonnaMack added the following:
I must comment on the lilies I received from this company. The Crystal Blancas are on my patio and each one has three large bulbs. It is not customary to receive lilies that form three flowers in their first blooming year, even from lily specialists. I intend to check them in future years, in case they have lilies that I would like. I am amazed. These plants are outstanding.
On September 20th, 2013, DonnaMack added the following:
Having had two good experiences with Hallson Gardens, I thought of them when I was seeking polygonatums. Hallson gives the buyer the ability to be emailed when sought after plants become available. I asked for an email alert for polygonatum odoratum \\\\\\\'Variegatum\\\\\\\'. The cost was more than reasonable, and having received others of their plants, I knew that the roots would be substantial.
And they are - even larger than I hoped. Expertly shipped and undamaged. This company is terrific.
On May 9th, 2014, DonnaMack added the following:
Another excellent order from Hallson.
Although they state that their specialty is hostas I have found their perennials to be outstanding, and quite inexpensive. I ordered two colors of hardy geraniums and got big bareroot plants.
I also order a trio of two kinds of lilies, and received four of each. AND a free lily. Again, if they have a lily that you would like, don\\\\\\\'t hesitate to order.
On April 22nd, 2015, DonnaMack added the following:
History repeats itself. Beautiful bareroot plumbagos, great lilies.
But with a twist. My order was to be shipped the week of the 27th. I emailed Chris to let him know that there was a problem with that date. Expressing his concern for the lilies, Chris asked whether he could ship them immediately, since lilies tend to sprout. I happily agreed.
I just put my beautiful plants into the ground. Good sized, well branched plumbago and as usual, fabulous llilies. And every plant I have ordered from them in the last two years is thriving.
Four orders and they are batting 1000. Terrific company, and excellent customer service from Chris.
On April 29th, 2016, DonnaMack added the following:
Another year, another beautiful experience with this fine company. I ordered some trios of lilies - I was pleasantly surprised that I was given some extras, and I just put them all in - healthy, sprouted, and ready to go. Hallson truly knows how to package lilies so they arrive in perfect condition, and provides plenty of advance notice of the exact day of arrival. It makes ordering and planting a true pleasure.
On May 4th, 2017, DonnaMack added the following:
I am usually scared off by bare root perennials, because I have lost more of them than any other type of plant. But I took a chance with Hallson, given the excellent experience I have had with them, and ordered Athyrium 'Branford Rambler' plants, which arrived yesterday. Not only were the largest I have received, but they were sprouted, and because they were so beautifully packaged, they were perfect. The lilies were perfect too, but I am accustomed to that. It means that when I am adding to my collection of ferns, Hallson will now be my first choice.

This past winter, I stumbled on Hallson Gardens online and was very impressed with the website. When I saw the high ratings on Watchdog, I knew I had to give this company a try. A friend of mine ordered for both of us. She ordered several types of perennials and I ordered hostas. Our order arrived and "WOW!!" I was blown away by the generous size and excellent quality of our new plants. I've purchased hundreds of bareroot plants over the years, but NONE have had the super-long, full roots like those from Hallsons Gardens.

Ordered hibiscus from Hallson over the last few years. This year I ordered hibiscus and lily bulbs. Nice selection of perennials and lilies on the website. The hibiscus are sent at the correct time (not too early) and the stems are marked for the correct planting depth. Chris is a grower that definitely cares for the plants he grows. Around two weeks ago, I ordered a variety of hostas from Hallson Gardens. I was a little nervous as it was my first time ordering from a mail order nursery, as well as it being midsummer. I'm planning my spring order for my first spring planting ever for my own house. I emailed Chris to find out when I should likely be able to start working the ground here (I live 1 hour East of their nursery), and he responded FAST. Their website is really clear about all they have, they have a great variety of plants, and they are extremely friendly and helpful in all ways! I'm just deciding on the last few items I may or may not want to order, and then I'll be expecting a lovely shipment in another month or so from them.
As for my last order, I ordered some similar plants from another nursery (a "big" one), and their plants where either the same size or EXTREMELY small compared to Hallson's field grown plants! Hallson's plants were easily 3x the size, yet cheaper than the other company I used! So yes, Hallson's will get lots more business from me when I need/want plants - especially lilies!
On May 7th, 2014, buggzter added the following:
Still awesome! I just got a *BIG* order from them, and the shipping box couldn't have been packed tighter! The bags were 80% peat moss to protect the plants during shipping, and again - there was NO wiggle room in the box, which means the plants couldn't be damaged in transit! Everything is excellently labeled, my plants from past orders are doing wonderfully and I expect no less from these plants! Also, their bulbs are *HUGE*, healthy, and all set to take off in my new garden beds! I only saw about 3% of the bulbs with any marks or issues whatsoever (which will not have effect on performance - just cosmetic issues only), which is amazing considering just how many plants I got from them. :) Still very VERY pleased with these guys! Thanks Chris! Again, I'll be going back to them next time I need stuff. :)

I ordered three different types of ferns from Hallson Gardens, and was very pleased with my experience. (The ferns are bare root, so will not see much of them until spring.) The bare roots were of generous size--one variety had 4 or 5 eyes on it. They sent me two extra roots of one type, and threw in another kind of fern for free. The order arrived in a very expeditious manner. I would be happy to do business with this company again in the future.

Received my fifth Hosta order today and they have outdone themselves. The plants were HUGE and root systems very healthy. Packaged with such great care, they never arrive damaged. Also they wrap the roots with damp paper and when they arrive, (within 3 business days) they are still damp and the plants are nice and fresh looking, not droopy at all.
My latest order upon arrival consisted of Avocado, Fried Bananas, Abiqua Moonbeam and a bonus plant called Paradigm. I wish I had more shady spots to fill.

I have gotten several more Hosta w/bonus plants from Hallson and they never fail to impress me with the beauty of the Hosta, the care taken with packaging, even my husband said WOW you can tell that company really cares about the plants when they package them. The roots are amazing, all clean, no dirt or mess. Other online Hosta companies pack their Hosta (1/4 of the size of Chris's) in like 4 inch pots, with sticks taped into the pots to avoid in inevitable mess, still arrive a mess and a huge pain to unwrap without damaging the plants, there is no comparison to the quality of Chris's plants and packaging. I have even contacted Chris to see if he had any Hosta hanging around even tho they were shown as sold out. He promptly answered he had some that maybe had a little frost damage but healthy roots. Gave me a great discount on them and they looked perfect on arrival, better than other companies so called top quality. Guaranteed virus free. Love this place-I will be ordering more in the near future and maybe try some of the perennials offered (if I can find room in my yard for them LOL) Every Single Hosta has thrived and have flowered their first season in my yard. BAR NONE-THEY ARE THE BEST.

My second order this year (so far :) ) of three huge hosta, Blue Umbrellas, Abba Dabba Do and Flower Power with a bonus of Summer Breeze did not disappoint. Absolutely gorgeous plants with giant root systems, like Hosta's on steroids. The three I ordered were for areas where they will be planted in their own niche with no other Hosta, only accent perennials. They came in so large they are already impressive. I have ordered a couple of lily bulbs and daylily plants which are doing well and some blooming already.
I can't say enough about the wonderful job Chris and Brian do. I hope to continue giving them as much business as I can afford.
