I ordered some peonies and a few daylillies from Gilbert H Wild & Sons for fall 2017. The peony divisions were more robust than those I had ordered from Eden Bros earlier this year (shouldn't have bothered with spring planting). Of the seven peonies ordered from GHW&S only one had 3 eyes, most had 5, one even had 7! Larger eyes on the 3 and smaller on the 7. Everything arrived well packed; peonies bagged in lightly damp pine shavings and labeled by variety, daylillies labeled and in the box with shredded newspaper. Got a bonus daylily, too.

Their pricing was quite competitive, and it was nice to be ordering from a co that has been growing peonies in my region for over 100 years. Looking forward to how everything grows!

I have had wonderful experiences buying from Gilbert H. Wild.

All of the plants I have ordered have been beautiful, and of hundreds of plants, only one has died.

I have gotten incredible deals on Hosta and Day Lilies. The more expensive \\\\\\\"named\\\\\\\" Hosta collections are also a great value, and I have been thrilled with the named and un-named hosta and day lily packages I have purchased.

The first time I ordered from Wild, I think 3 years ago, I was kind of amazed (and definitely thrilled) by the size and health of the hosta roots I received. I could not wait to order again--right away I ordered more. And I bought beautiful named day lilies on clearance last fall, at insanely great prices. I just placed another order today...I have absolutely no doubt that I will receive gorgeous healthy plants. One of the best, and possibly the very best company I have ever ordered plants from. I have recommended them to several friends and family members, all of whom have been delighted with the plants they bought from Wild.

I read some of these negative reviews, and it sounds like those folks had some bad experiences. My experience with this company is 100% positive, through several years, through multiple orders totaling at least 500 plants.

On June 13th, 2015, ncbill added the following:

I placed a couple of orders with Wild this season. One huge order of Hosta (about 160 plants), and a small gift order of Iris.

My orders were shipped quickly. The plants were well packed, healthy and nice sizes. The bargain \\\"handful of hosta\\\" bare roots were so big and healthy, many of them had full-size leaves just one week after going in the ground. My late-season order had a couple of substitutions, not a big deal for me.

Never a disappointment. Great plants, quick service. I had occasion to email and phone the company with questions this year, and customer service was great.

Great service and great value. Love this company.
On May 11th, 2017, ncbill added the following:

Received another great batch of plants from Gilbert H. Wild a couple days ago. Daylilies were gorgeous, huge plants. Almost every daylily could have been divided, and still would have been more substantial than the plants shipped (at full price) by other vendors. Hosta, Heuchera and Iris plants were beautifully packed, nice sizes, gorgeous plants. All of the named cultivars were marked with appropriate, legible, durable labels.

Some of Wild\'s prices, for the more \"desirable\" (newest) cultivars are just average. However, they always have BOGO Free specials, a \"clearance\" section, and \"Collections\" that bundle together groups of plants for significant discounts. The \"Handfuls\" offerings, assorted Hosta and assorted Daylilies, 100 plants for 100 bucks, is one of the best values around. Period.

I speculate that Gilbert Wild, with their interesting selections, sometimes attracts shoppers who are more accustomed to shopping the pricy, hold-your-hand, kiss-your-butt boutique nurseries that we all love, but far fewer of us can afford.

If your expectation is to order and quickly receive healthy, beautiful plants with a minimum of fuss and at very reasonable prices, you will almost certainly be very pleased with Wild. Of all the vendors I order from, Gilbert Wild is probably the best value, the most bang for your buck.

On October 13th, 2017, ncbill added the following:

Gilbert H. Wild remains one of my very favorite plant purveyors. I ordered lots from them this season, and was very pleased with almost everything. One order, out of about 12 orders this season, was disappointing--poorly packed and some very, very small hosta plugs that had obviously just been placed in some loose potting medium in larger pots. It was not the quality of merchandise and not the careful shipping that I have come to expect from Wild. That was the only time I ever requested replacements. I had quite a lot of plants from that order that did not survive. I only requested two replacements, and they were sent without incident, and the replacements were extra-nice plants. Lots of great deals on hostas, daylilies (huge!), foxgloves, heuchera, primroses, irises--everything healthy. Packing is generally as good as it gets, with everything properly marked and packed for safe shipment. I had a few occasions to call the Wild office, and experienced great, friendly customer service every time except once, when I spoke with someone who was very snippy with absolutely no cause to be. Gilbert Wild, one of my favorite purveyors, isn't perfect--one order (out of about 30+ total orders) that wasn't up to their own high standards, and one short conversation with someone who wasn't having a good day. I might downgrade Wild from an A+ to an A, except I still have to compare them to all the other vendors, in which case they remain among the best of the best. A+ and highly recommended.

I love GHW! They are the only company I use now for my perennials. I just received my fall order of peonies and they awesome! They are nuzzled happily in the ground! The coneflower and aster collections they offer are second to none in my opinion! Their catalog is the only one I keep. I\'m kind of a peony, lily and daylily guy so I\'m thinking of having my DNA tested to see if I have any Wild genes in me! I used the positive reviews from Dave\'s Garden to order from them the first time and I am so glad I did. Disregard the negative comments here. They are a top notch company and if you have a problem with an order they will make it right!

Today I received my order (this is at least my 7th order over past several years) from Gilbert H Wild. I simply cannot possibly convey my appreciation of this company in words! I will highlight some points from the last few years of orders.

1) INCREDIBLE VALUE for unique perennial varieties simply not available at local nurseries in upstate New York.

2) QUALITY Of PRODUCTS. Peony roots are substantial 3-5 eye (majority received are on the 5 side...sometimes more). All varieties of Hosta I've received over the year have taken hold and thrived. The Iris plants I planted last spring grew so well, I was able to divide this fall into 3-6 healthy fans and replanted.

3) COMPANY COMMITMENT TO CUSTOMER...the owner will answer and speak with customers directly...really pleasant surprise. I saw Greg's direct line in a previous post. I expected voicemail, but was surprised by an immediate live voice.

4) SHIPPING AND PACKAGING. Again significant value on shipping cost (free once minimum order met, even small orders are reasonable) . Potted plants are individually protected by plastic bags to keep plant from shifting in containers, then surrounded by cardboard "tubes" for further protection.. a real class act!

The negative feedback posted are truly from anomaly orders. I certainly don't have insight to the previous negative post details...I'm sure things can just happen and plants do not makes the transition from harvesting--> shipping-->replanting.

I personally will return again and again. Thank you to Gilbert H Wild for adding more color to my world!

Bottom line....this is a company one can order from with confidence!

A+++++++ GILBERT H. WILD & Son!!!!
I ordered from 6 companies this year. I have had HORRID experiences with another company (Farmer Seed Company - total frauds). So I was SO HAPPY and RELIEVED to get GREAT SERVICE from GILBERT H. WILD & SON!

The plants I received were lush and beautiful. The packaging was very protective and well labeled.

Additionally, I contacted when one flower was a bit small and didn't seem to do well and it was a higher price daylily, Diva's Choice. Well they IMMEDIATELY shipped me a new one. They were so kind and professional. That won me over. It is to be expected that some plants will have issue and the seller can not always foresee those occurrence. Plants are delicate. The seller's response is what counts.

When I look at all that I planted this year (easily spent $600-$1,000 on plants this year) I must say the some of the most gorgeous blooms and greatest growth are the ones from Gilbert H. Wild and Son.

I realize there are a couple negative comments below, however, it looks like at least one was very unfair and left out details. After dealing with Farmer Seed Companies horror, I am going to be VERY PICKY and only companies I trust will receive future orders.

When I email GHWS - they have responded all 3 times, very quickly. I emailed them a dumb question just yesterday to see if they would reply again. They did the very next day.

Thank you GILBERT H. WILD and SON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you! Flowers bring me joy and your service made me smile!

Placed an order for Bleeding Heart collection and Coneflower collection. Planted them as soon as they arrived. Within 2 weeks 2 of the Coneflowers and one Bleeding Heart were dead. I called customer service and they said they would send replacements. When I opened the replacements I was shocked at the quality of the plants. One coneflower was just a cylinder of mud and the Bleeding Heart had one live root the others were rotten and falling off. This time when I called customer service they were not nice at all. The lady keep arguing that there had to be some roots or leaves on the replacement coneflower. I told here that I had taken pictures of it as soon as I opened the box. She was not interested in seeing pictures. I can't believe anyone would send 'plants' of such poor quality. She informed me that I would receive store credit because they could not continue to ship replacements. When I tried to use my store credit I found out I would have to pay shipping and handling charges. When I called to ask why when I had paid shipping and handling on the original order she got rude in explaining that was their policy to only give you credit for the plants. I was given a store credit for $8.76 but would have to pay $8.00 shipping and handling to use it. I don't believe you should have to pay twice. I won't be using the store credit or order from them again.

So I emailed customer service and asked for the credit so I could apply it to this year's order. I received no response. About a week later, I resent the email with an additional note. Again, no response.
It seems Wild is happy to send their plants as long as they are not bothered again after that.

Given the number of negative ratings and comments, I did have some reservations about ordering from this company. But their spring sale prices enticed me to give it a try. I ordered several dozen different on-sale daylilies for $2.50 each and quite a few BOGO's for $5.00 or less.

I waited a while for the order to arrive, and when it did I was out of town. It sat on my porch for 4 days before I opened it. I was wonderfully surprised. These were big, sizeable roots with still green foliage. The potted ones were in one case almost 18" tall.

I don't know what causes the apparent variation in their service or quality, but in my case for about $80 I got big healthy daylilies that would have cost me hundreds of dollars had I bought them from any of the other online sellers I looked at.

I will definitely buy from them again and will continue to do so as long as the quality of their product remains this high.

I have ordered from GW for the past 2 years and I have been pleased both times. I have only ordered daylilies and a couple of irises. The plants are always packed well and they are healthy plants with good roots. I will say a few of the daylilies could have used a larger container because their root balls were so large. Most everything bloomed the first year, but not all. That\'s ok, I know that sometimes it takes a year for the plant to bloom. However, even the plants that didn\'t bloom grew larger. Neither iris I ordered bloomed last year and a few of the daylilies did not bloom so I look forward to seeing those this summer. I just placed my third order with GW last week and this time I am trying a few hostas and some more daylilies. I am looking forward to getting my box in March!

On February 6th, 2017, raestr added the following:

Just an update on the plants I received last March. As usual, the daylilies were very nice. The hostas were inconsistent. I received a few very nice sized plants, especially the Wheee hosta I ordered. However, others were very small. I will say, all of the hosta made it through the summer, and the summer of 2016 was very hot and dry here. I expect all of the hosta to emerge this spring, but I will have to wait and see.

All are now planted - the tops are green - the roots systems are great - I am pleased (as always). Have ordered for years - saw fields once long time ago and met old owner - started growing daylilies and iris from him. Once they quit growing iris but later started growing them again. Their prices are great. Last fall I ordered lilies and peonies - they are doing great. (My favorite daylily has been Real Wind - I waited until the price went down and I could afford it.)

I ordered 2 All Gold Hykone grass and 2 perennial Allegro Poppy. The poppies look barely alive with several dead leaves and maybe 2-3 green leaves on each plant. I decided to keep and see if I can nurse them back.

Apparently they were all out of the All Gold Grass so they shipped 2 Variegated Hykone Grass. When I called them and told them they had shipped me the wrong item they said it was substituted because they were out of the All Gold and that gentleman said they are virtually the same grass. I stated that they are not the same.

He said I could send them back and I asked if I would have to pay shipping and he said yes. I told him I did not order them and was charged for them and now I have to pay shipping? Really? He sounded disgruntled and then asked for my last name and zip code and said that he has issued a $16.00 credit. I assumed that I would be credited back to my charge card since after the experience I did not want to order anything else from them. Apparently it is a merchandise credit to order more....sigh.

I still have not seen the credit nor do I even know where to look. When you do email them, they give you very short answers that really don\\\'t explain anything. I guess I will try to use the credit and then I can be done with them.

Sadly, one Butterfly Bush got damaged in the shipping process. But, the friendly people at GH Wild said they will send out a replacement on May 9.

The plants were all packaged VERY well and in excellent condition. The plants, bulbs, bare-roots, and tubers were all top quality! I even got a free Daylily in each shipment!

I cannot say enough nice things about this company and the people who work there! I am very, very happy with my order and will order from them again next year to fill in some empty spaces. I have had some seriously bad experiences with mail-order plants - especially from QVC's 2 vendors (you probably know who they are). With recent negative posts here, and overall, they seem to have a good number of them amongst positive comments, I won't place another order unless Gilbert wants to reply, and respond to these issues about my peonies (and I was looking forward to placing my new order that includes other plants too). Don't wish to have contact with another unpleasant phone assistant - is this "customer service"? (I placed that 1st order via phone, and was assisted by a very nice and polite man)

Shame on you Gilbert H Wild....I ordered a few daylilies from GHW last season and most of them did not bloom. i received a merchandise credit, which I used to order Carolina Pansy Face daylily. The credit covered the cost of the plant and I had to pay the shipping which was eight dollars. The plant came within a few days along with a bonus daylily...Rosey Returns. The bonus plant was dead and the Carolina Pansy Face was half dead....about five leaves and two were yellow.

I emailed their customer sevice and they apologized and said that I could return the plant to them at my cost. i declined to spent another dime with them. Why should I have to pay to return a half dead plant that should not have been shipped in the first place.

They came back later and said to place the dead Rosy Returns in water and it would be okay....just dry due to shipping. They also informed me that their plants are guaranteed for a year. Neither of these plants should have been shipped. The Carolina Pansy Face was way too small, and the Rosy Returns is dead. I will never shop with them again.

I have ordered 4 empress wu hostas and also 50 Bertie Ferris day lilies from this company, yesterday they arrived and was I surprised. I have about 250 day lilies in my yard and have ordered day lilies from some of the top suppliers, these were the largest and most beautiful Day Lilly roots that I have EVER received. This impressed me so much that I will use Gilbert H. Wild as my FIRST choice when shopping for any plants. I was so happy that I am going out into the yard to take measurements just to purchase some Oriental Lilly's from them. I previously ordered some Iris World Premier and are eagerly waiting for them to arrive. I am a very particular man when it comes to my yard and the flowers that I purchased from this company have EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS.

Ordered 3 iris and received 2 free lily bulbs with my order. One of the iris rhizomes was huge, and I received 2 each of the other ones I ordered which were regular sized. All appear to be healthy and viable. Pleased with my experience, the prices were extremely reasonable and got good quality plants when promised.

I placed my first order with this company early spring and asked for May shipping, as we'd had a horrid winter with tons of snow and wasn't sure the snow would be gone!

I ordered a Bushel of Blooms (5 their-choice, named Peonys), a specific Peony I wanted, 2 buy-one-get-one-free Daylilies and 2 buy-one-get-one-free Hostas. I was wowed with the nice size of the Peony bare roots, with large eyes ready to start sprouting (had). The daylilies were larger than I expected. I was not sure what to expect, this being my first order; so I didnt order as much as I would have liked..decided to tread cautiously. The hostas were on the smaller size, BUT they were potted and GROWING, nice little plants. I have bought bare root hostas that didnt get that big the first year planted, so NO complaints and the root systems were very good.

I received an extra Daylily as a freebie; the company gives you a free plant to help make up for the shipping cost. All have been planted and are doing well and I am looking forward to the blooms and would order from this company again!

Shipping was right on time, as I requested, and I had occassion to contact customer service with a question and was answered very quickly via return email. It was a very good buying experience in my opinion

I have never reviewed a plant company before, but after getting my Gilbert H. Wild catalog yesterday, I felt compelled to become a Dave\'s Garden member so I could tell you why I didn\'t toss the Wild catalog in the recycle bin.

I have previously ordered from this company. If forced to review them, I would have given a neutral rating. Why? They sent very large peonies, nice hosta and, usually, pretty nice Daylilies. Sometimes I felt they were a little small, but for $3.50, I got to try a new variety. Sometimes they were very nice sized. My issue was their 30 day guarantee. Peonies almost never bloom the first year. The Daylilies would not bloom in 30 days. I had a few Daylilies and a peony bloom in a color other than pictured in the catalog. I read reviews here and decided not to contact customer service. Their guarantee clearly stated 30 days. I knew that.

I had no intention of ever ordering from Wild again, since their guarantee didn\'t meet my needs. I couldn\'t resist looking through the catalog before recycling it. They do put out a nice catalog. I am so glad I looked through it. The owner has a letter on the inside cover. He specifically addresses the concerns mentioned on this site. The new guarantee is for one year! It sounds as if the business recognizes they needed to work on customer service and is doing so. I applaud that, and I will order from them again. I hope others give them a try.

As stated in the guidelines for writing a review, it is only fair to try working issues out with a company before blasting them in a public forum. This company does send quality plants. I really respect the fact that they are working so diligently to win back old customers and earn the trust of new ones.

On April 24th, 2015, MommaCat88 changed the rating from positive to negative and added the following:

I was shipped replacements for plants that had been mislabeled a previous season. The owner seemed to want to make things right. The replacements that I received were very small, but two bloomed the first year. They were both the same color, small reds. I hadn't ordered any small reds.

If I was the owner, knowing that I was trying to make things right with a customer that had posted a "give this guy a second chance" review, I sure as heck would have gone to that field myself and made sure the correct varieties were shipped.

I guess if you don't really care what varieties you get, this company is a good deal. If you really want what you order, look elsewhere.

Generally I have been happy with what I received. All plants are wll marked. Potted plants have a label on the pot.

The plants in pots are well packed, yes they are small, what do you expect for the price. Nonetheless, nice plants.

The lily bulbs have always been received in top condition.

Iris's.....really disappointing quality. These were on year-end clearance and appeared to be the dregs.

Daylilies: You need to read the descriptions so that you are not surprised when you get seedlings. Nonetheless, I have been happy with the daylilies. From their site:

"... All plants are bareroot, 2-3 or more fan divisions, unless they are indicated as potted.

We pot all of our newer introductions in a 3" by 3" by 3.5" deep pot and ship in a protected sleeve. Potted plants are usually single fans about the size of your thumb or two smaller fans the size of your little finger. This is the same size pot we use for our field planting and have over 90% bloom, and the plants grow very quickly because of all the hair roots in the pot. "

I have ordered from Gilbert Wild for three years. Of the 100-plus plants I've purchased (a sampling of everything they offer from grasses to peonies), I've never experienced a failed plant! I can't say that about any other mail order company. In the interest of full disclosure, I've never spoken personally with a company rep because I've never had to. I use the mail order form accompanied by a check, and the plants always arrive around the time I requested and in good condition. I live in zone 3 and have ordered a few zone 5 plants from them just for giggles...even those have flourished! I'm real pleased.

I just received my first order placed with Gilbert H Wild and Sons and I must say that I received way more than I expected. All of the daylilies were tagged and packed beautifully. I ordered approx. 45 sets of lilies. I was expecting one to two fans per lily. I am going to have to make another bed to hold them all. Some of them came in with three to four fans per plant. The root base on these plants are huge!!. I am from Texas and was expecting somewhat of a loss due to the distance and the heat but everything came in just fine. The free bonus plant is actually color coordinated with what I had ordered. The customer service is great. I called after placing my order and the young lady I talked to was very informative and helpful with my questions. I am looking forward to ordering my irises from them as well. I will definitely recommend this company to my friends. Thank you Greg Jones and thanks to your awesome staff for all you do for your customers.

This is sad. Something bad has happened to a place which we really liked. We have ordered in the past from Gilbert H. Wild and were pleased at the product and service. Plants were beautiful and large and healthy. Because of such fine service, we expected at least decent service this time.

Please notice we tried to work things out with them on this before now. We tried and tried!

Something drastic has changed at that place of business. Whatever it is, we would never go back there so long as the same person was taking the orders. We would have to be assured of a great change before looking forward to their business the way it once was.

We now see from other negative reviews we are amongst others facing problems coming from apparently one person. It must have been the same as she dared us to say something bad on the Garden Watchdog and she would refute it saying what terrible customers we are.

Recently before we reordered, a neighbor cautioned that she received an order with dead plants and that we should beware. However, this was an anomaly surely not to recur, so we placed another order.

In the process of making the order, this time I talked with a person we now think may be called Debbie. I had a difficult time dealing with her, so talked with her boss who smoothed things out. Then I called again to add to the order and once again dealt with Debbie. It sounded as though all was straight and we heard nothing further until now.

I got word a childhood friend in France had passed away, so arranged to go back for the funeral. As we were leaving, we were surprised to see a box sitting in our driveway, checked it, found it full of plants in bad condition, and in need of urgent care to keep from all dying. That ruined our preparations and set back our plans. I was able to check them out and photograph their condition. One was rotted into mush.

As we were now ready for my flight to France, I took the time to call and explain what happened and was met with now a very hostile and accusing Debbie. When I mentioned the package came by surprise and at the worst possible time, Debbie simply shrugged that she had no way of telling us it was on its way (UPS) Yet I had contacted them numerous times in the past, through the only email procedure available, the one on their website, so they must have had our own.

It was Debbie with whom I discussed the order and final mix yet Debbie denied it and accused me of lying and trying to cheat to get free plants. This behavior surprised and shocked me as I tried to discuss only to be shouted down by a now belligerent Debbie.

I passed the phone to my husband who simply sought Debbie's name. Debbie had refused to identify herself but when he pushed, she said it was Debbie. She said if I wanted to talk to her boss I would have to call on Monday, and that was after I said I was leaving for France today. Then Debbie became argumentative with my husband as if we were trying to cheat and get free plants or threaten to report her. I told her in my 74 years I rarely meet employees who are so hostile with customers and who still think they are helping their business.

Finally she said she would replace the damaged plant and send the one she claimed was never agreed to, and for free so I couldn't report bad things to Dave's Garden and better tell them I got something free I never paid for. O.K. gee whiz, I got something for free, I guess.

Flabbergasted that any employee would talk to a client in such a rude matter, I cut the call as short as I could, realizing she will now sent the replacement and missing plant with the expectation I will not report to Dave's Garden. Well, she did send the replacement and a tracking number. The problem with that is it was set to arrive in our area on Friday of Memorial Day Weekend to be delivered five days later. The poor day lilies were two inches long and dried. I soaked them for three days and they are now planted. Our hopes are not high. Our resolve to never return to Gilbert H. Wild is very high.

I ordered a few lilies, irises and peonies from GHW. Some made it, some didn't, but I was particularly saddened that one of my peonies didn't make it... not only because it was pricier than the rest but I reallllly wanted that dang peony. I received the root last fall, it had a couple eyes on it, but this spring it was shriveled like a raisin. Of the 4 peonies from them, it was the only one to not make it. I emailed GHW to ask what their procedure was when this happens, since they "guarantee" their plants, and it even says on their site "all you need to do is let us know and we値l make it right!" Now, I wasn't expecting them to hand deliver a beautiful new root on a silver platter, but I was at least hoping for some sort of human response. All I got was one sentence that they were done shipping for the season. This was end of May, we're not talking about the middle of July/completely out of season. And yes I know they probably get a ton of emails like that and don't really give a hoot about my peony... but in an age when customer service is of such importance, and the internet exists to air grievances, it would suit GHW well to have a nicer boiler plate response than 'we're not shipping' and possibly some sort of solution, especially if you tout "guarantees" on your website. So if you're looking for cheap flowers, this is the place to go, or better yet might as well just go to the big box gardens, customer service is apparently all the same around here. But if you do shop GHW and you're excited for one particular kind of flower, order a few because you never know what will come up next year.
